SafeTalk Training Empowers

LifeTown is a place for learning, connection and friendship. It is also a place where all are welcomed and encouraged to understand unique challenges and differences. On April 6, LifeTown hosted a crucial SafeTalk Training Workshop to educate and empower all who attended with the tools to help a friend who may be struggling with mental health.

“It’s so important for teens to recognize these signs,” said Ann Ferreira, LifeTown Adult Program Director. “That’s really what it was all about.”

Maddie Fink, a student at Newark Academy, added, “There are so many people missing the small hints from those who are struggling. Being able to recognize the behaviors of those who are having thoughts of suicide could save many lives.”

The three-hour workshop was led by Levi Stein, a licensed SafeTalk Suicide Prevention Trainer. Stein delved into the warning signs of mental health struggles, informing attendees how to identify these signs and consequently, how to react appropriately in order to provide help. The attendees were encouraged to engage in open, direct and honest conversation with someone having suicidal thoughts.

“Asking is critical,” said Fink. “Many people are scared to admit they are having suicidal thoughts, and all they need to open up is someone to start the conversation by asking them directly.”

Ferreira added, “The attendees are now able to recognize the signs and more alert to what someone might be thinking. And you can really change someone’s life.”

The workshop also emphasized the importance of community and mental health resources. One of Friendship Circle’s goals is to create that community and safe haven for anyone who needs support.

“The one takeaway that stood out was that each time someone gave information about committing suicide or what they were planning, they were really looking for personal connection,” said Ferreira. “Friendship Circle is the biggest way to make meaningful connections and is so important for people’s lives.”

Friendship Circle is committed to providing a community hub for people of all abilities. The SafeTalk training further empowered that community with the tools and knowledge to help someone who is struggling by engaging in an open dialogue and creating positive, impactful change.
