Much More Than Hamantashen
The celebration of Purim is a festive occasion marked by creative costumes, homestyle baking, and storytelling. Each year, LifeTown creates unforgettable events to mark this joyous holiday.
On Sunday, March 1, two hundred people gathered at LifeTown for a community hamantash bake. Flour puffed through the air as people of all ages rolled out dough and chose from a variety of delicious fillings, like sprinkles, chocolate chips, marshmallows and fruit. There was even gluten free flour on hand for those in need. The event was an opportunity to not only celebrate with friends, but to meet new people in the community.

“We’ve been talking to other people at our table and they’re telling us about their experiences making hamantash,” said Jodi Yoser. “Everyone has favorite fillings and has been sharing stories.”
“Every time I come here, I meet someone new,” said Allison Ritter, who attended the event with her 15-year-old daughter, Emma. “I think it’s really nice to get together for the holidays.”
No two hamantashen looked alike, which exemplified the diversity and inclusivity that LifeTown fosters. Everyone is welcome to participate, resulting in a room filled with love and acceptance. Even people who have never celebrated Purim or baked hamantashen gave it a try.
“I don’t normally bake and I’ve never baked hamantashen,” said Liz Rashbaum. “I had no idea what this was going to be and it’s amazing. Being here feels warm, it feels inclusive, it feels rewarding, and it makes me happy. There’s so many people, it’s so community-oriented, and it’s just great fun.”

“This is not something I was familiar with baking, nor did I know how to pinch correctly and it really has been an eye-opening experience,” said Livingston resident, Stephanie Welling. “It’s a great way for the community to come together.”
At the conclusion of the event, beautiful Purim baskets were distributed, filled with sweet treats, popcorn, a mezuzah case, and of course, hamantash.
The Hamantash Bake event was only the beginning of an exciting week. Hundreds of people also took part in multiple megillah readings throughout the Purim holiday and enjoyed a fun-filled Purim Party on Tuesday evening, March 3.

Creative costumes were on display at the Purim Party where children and adults alike dressed up for the occasion. Everyone dined on a delicious Chinese buffet dinner, and delighted in Purim activities and an interactive game show. The smiles were evident all evening and it was the perfect way to close out the holiday.
“LifeTown does so much for the community,” said Brooke Alper. “For the kids and adults who come here and for those who are part of the community, whether you come once a year or every day, the staff welcomes you the same way.”
“Whenever we get the chance to come here and be a part of the festivities, we take the opportunity,” said Yoser. “Everything is special at LifeTown.”
