Teens Launch New Volunteer Year

On Wednesday evening, September 3, 150 teen volunteers filled LifeTown, eager to lend a helping hand. The annual Kickoff event was an inspiring night that welcomed teens back at the beginning of the new school year. Teens volunteer in the many Friendship Circle programs, such as after-school activities, Torah Circle, and other special events.
“The Kickoff event was amazing,” said seventh-grade student Rachel Guralnick. “I can’t wait to meet new kids and change their lives.”
“I’m looking forward to bonding with the kids and learning about their personalities,” said Audrey Eida, also a seventh grader.

The bonds that teen volunteers develop with LifeTown participants are impactful and one-of-a-kind. Angela Brewer spoke to the teens about the importance of their commitment. Brewer is the mother of four children, including Cy, who was diagnosed with an extremely rare disorder. Teen volunteers are vital to families like Angela’s, who rely on their help at LifeTown.
“In a world where everyone talks about making a difference, you’re actually doing it,” said Brewer. “Not for social media posts or hashtags, but through something very real – by showing up, being present, and making genuine connections. You’re not just learning about inclusion, you’re creating it.”
“It was particularly impactful to hear from Angela,” said Emily Eida, parent of teen volunteer Audrey. “She not only shared her personal story but also stressed how meaningful the experience will be for the volunteers themselves.”

This year, Friendship Circle introduced a new app to help volunteers more easily track their hours and sign up for programs. The teens downloaded the app on the spot while snacking on popcorn and Chinese food.
Last year, nearly 900 teen volunteers contributed tens of thousands of hours at LifeTown, and this year promises to be even greater.
As teens began signing up for programs, excitement built around all the incredible upcoming volunteer experiences. Volunteers are the heartbeat of LifeTown, bringing love and light to all the participants, and, in turn, creating memorable moments that they, themselves, will never forget.
