A Sensational Summer at LifeTown

Summer is all about soaking up carefree days with friends and family. Once again, Friendship Circle created memories to last a lifetime at their fun-filled summer camp. During four weeks this summer, laughter echoed through the halls and the indoor pool filled with joyful splashes as kids and adults with special needs filled every corner of LifeTown, taking advantage of unparalleled programming specifically geared toward summer break.

“The experience is amazing—not just for the kids, but for the whole family,” said Dr. Kenya Lazovik, whose 4-year-old son, Luca, attended camp for the first time this summer. “The staff and volunteers are caring, patient, and help every child feel safe, supported, and included. They understand that every child is unique and customize activities so each camper can succeed and have fun. That level of attention and love sets Friendship Circle camp apart from traditional day camps.”

Upon entering LifeTown, 100 campers were greeted by an impressive electronic kiosk – a new addition to camp. Campers delighted in scanning their color-coded schedules, which helped them not only navigate their day, but also built anticipation for all the activities they were set to explore.

“There are remarkable children and adults at this amazing camp,” said volunteer counselor, Larry Cohen. Cohen’s two grandsons, 6-year-old Danny and 3-year-old Ethan, also participated as campers. “I never went to camp, so this was a great experience for me. I got to really know the campers and help them with a variety of projects and activities.”

“The real heroes are the teen and adult volunteers,” said Toba Grossbaum, executive director of Friendship Circle. “Watching them give up their summer days to help campers succeed was inspiring. Their kindness and energy brought so much joy to everyone at LifeTown.”

Children played sports in the gym and on the newly-upgraded football field, located just outside LifeTown. They splashed around in the zero-entry indoor pool, created beautiful art projects, and bowled strikes in the state-of-the-art alley. They tapped into their creativity by making colorful tie dye shirts and kept moving with exciting dance and yoga classes.

“Luca’s favorite activity was swimming,” said Lazovik. “Being in the water made him so happy and relaxed. It gave him freedom of movement and a sense of independence that he really enjoys.”

Adult participants also took part in all the fun activities, caring for the adorable animals at the petting zoo, singing along during lively music and drumming workshops, and baking delicious challah.

“Danielle had a blast at camp this year. She couldn’t wait to go every day,” said Susan Sass of her 26-year-old daughter. “I’m very grateful for everyone at Friendship Circle for all they do for participants of every age.”

As summer winds down, campers and counselors alike will carry the memories of Friendship Circle’s unforgettable camp experience with them into the new year.

“Friendship Circle gives children with special needs the opportunity to enjoy summer camp in a way that works for them,” said Lazovik. “It helps them build confidence while having an incredible time. For kids like Luca, it’s more than just camp—it’s a place where they can truly thrive.”

“This summer reminded us once again why camp is at the heart of Friendship Circle,” said Toba. “Every smile, every achievement, and every friendship formed is a testament to the power of community and inclusion.”
